Jamaica International Backgammon Competition Returns After 2-Year Hiatus.

The island is abuzz this year, as Jamaica International Backgammon Championship 2022 returns after a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic.

The annual Championship takes place over two weekends, in July and October.

The first event, the Warmup competition takes place from Friday, July 8-10. It will be hosted by Jamaica Inn in Ocho Rios, St Ann, making it its 5th annual Backgammon fundraising tournament, The Jamaica Open.

The second tournament weekend features the Main Event, October 13-17. It will be hosted by Bamboo Blue located on the secluded beach of the gated Mammee Bay Estate community in Ocho Rios. It will also be Bamboo Blu’s first Backgammon tournament since 2019.

Bamboo Blu has been rated 4.5 of 5 on Tripadvisor and ranked #2 of 110 restaurants in Ocho Rios. Its spacious and secure beach front property located next to RIU Hotels & Resorts — also a sponsor of the tournament — boasts top class amenities, including parking.

The Jamaica International Backgammon Championship 2022 kicks off with a welcome cocktail party at Jamaica Inn, setting the tone for the weekend warm up competition and paving the way for the Main Event over the second weekend, October 13-17.

The tournament will benefit from the enormous expertise of the worlds first “Professor of Backgammon” Phil Simborg, as co-host.

Phil will lead the tournament and share gaming insights and strategies with registered local and international players through seminars. His incredible sense of humour means there’s never a dull moment when Phil is around, making him a joy to be with.

As such, the competition organisers promise players of all skill levels a memorable competition, comradery and excitement, with lots of prizes, including trophies, and giveaways.

Co-host of the tournament, Phil brings to the backgammon competition over 20 years of experience as a full-time professional player and private tutor, with many of his students having won major tournaments around the world.

With its mission of environmental and marine sustainability and protection, the funds raised from its annual Backgammon tournament has enabled Jamaica Inn Foundation to partner with others to establish the White River Fish Sanctuary.

Monies raised have funded the demarcation of the sanctuary, the hiring of a manager and employment of 14 wardens to patrol the protected area 24/7. The White River Fish Sanctuary has also acquired a patrol boat, diving gear and hired and trained divers to grow 1,000 pieces of Acropora Cervicornis (staghorn coral) in a coral nursery.

Phil is co-founder and co-director, with Michy/Akiko, of the International Collegiate Backgammon Championships. He lectures at many US tournaments and leads seminars to groups all over the world via the internet. He is also a lecturer and author of over 200 published articles on backgammon and has volunteered much time in bringing new, young players into the game.

Bamboo Blu is affiliated with the Cool Groups of diversified companies, including Cool Charities, the vehicle through which much funds are being donated to schools in St Ann and St Mary, as well to engage the youth in sporting activities for a better lifestyle, among other initiatives.
